Respectful and solidly crafted, these pre-war Dickens adaps suffer from cramming long novels into a film's pint pot. The Old Curiosity Shop (1934) coaxes a terrifyingly villainous Quilp from short-arse Hay Petrie in a sentimental tale whose Little Nell owes as much to silent cinema as to Dickens.
